Matt Grainger is a well known and respected Big Wave surfer and CEO of Manly Surf School and High Performance Surf Centre (HPSC), Sydney. As well as being a devout family man, Matt runs surf programs for school groups, locals, tourists and team building programs for corporations. If he wasn’t busy enough, Matt competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (winning his last tournament) and is also mentoring current and up and coming elite professional surfers through the High Performance Surf Centre.
Matt started surf coaching at Warringah Council as a 13 year old boy in 1983 and was employed every season as a surf instructor, whilst at High School and worked with World Champion Surfers, Pam Burridge and Mark Warren. When Matt turned 19, he became Head Instructor at the Warringah Council Surf School Program and was involved in Surf Safety Presentations for the NSW State Government and the NSW Education Department. Matt competed in NSW State Titles, Australian Titles and also selected professional events whilst studying at the University of Technology, Sydney, in Leisure Studies and completing his Degree in 1991.
Matt started Manly Surf School with a team of 4 and became Surfing NSW Coaching Director and Head Coach of Sydney for the NSW Institute of Sports program. In this role, Matt trained World Tour surfers including Adrian Buchan, Tom Whittaker, Chelsea Georgeson and Glenn Hall.
From its humble beginnings, Manly Surf School has grown to 50,000 students each year with a Team of 20 Qualified Instructors. Matt has recently opened the new High Performance Surf Centre, Sydney. The gym is unique in that it is targeted at surfers and caters for Elite Professionals such as Nathan Hedge, Cooper Chapman, Davey Cathels, Harley Ross Webster and Fraser Dovell, up and coming kids (including Matt’s son Tasman and daughter Bella) and also the middle aged surfer who wants to train for an upcoming surf trip or to gain that edge over their mates.
